10/23/2009 Newark, OH Midland Theatre

I missed the show with the ladies and Scottie in St. Paul, but I hear it was fantastic!  I was pretty bummed not to be there..

Tonight we played the Midland Theatre in Newark, OH and it was incredible as well..
We started the day with promo at a local Columbus radio station.  The whole band came with Ruthie and I to the station, and they were gracious enough to accomodate everyone playing, acoustically.  It was awesome!

It was really fun seeing  and hearing everyone in one small room together..

We ate lunch at this great Hot Dog place in Columbus, I think it's called "Frank's Place"?  Really, really great hot dogs...

The show at the Midland was awesome, and our friend Vance Gilbert even joined us onstage!

What an amazing couple of days we have had!  Canada, while very cold, embraced us with open arms!!  It was a long travel day to get here on Thursday, but we made it and even managed to get a little rest that night..
Breakfast, Friday and Saturday mornings was stupendous, this little place across from the hotel.  It had Kona coffee, which I have never tried before this, and my word is it stupendous!!!!  I had to take some home, there's a little bit of irony to that though, I bought Hawaiian Kona Coffee in Canada.. hmm...
So for two nights we rocked the Blasted Church Vineyards.. what an amazing setting to have a concert!!!

Yummy wine!

It looks like the vines go directly into the lake!!

The candles were lit, the room was gorgeous both nights!!!

Both nights were incredible evenings for us and we can't thank everyone at the Blasted Church Vineyards enough for the amazing hospitality they provided for us both at the venue and at our hotel!  You guys really know how to take care of a travellin band!!  Thanks again, have us back anytime!!!  And the Wine is Delicious, I recommend it to anyone who is a wine drinker...

We have a week off and then we are in Columbus next, Hadden's stomping ground, so we look forward to seeing some of you there!

9/20/2009 Telluride Blues and Brews Festival

We hit weather today, there was snow and sleet and hail on our way to Telluride.  I wasn't too worried.  We had to switch places with Ryan Shaw (by the way, you all should check him out, he is just awesome!).  He was very gracious to do that for us, I'm certain had it not hailed on us and slowed us down that we would have been there completely on time!  When we hit the stage, the skies cleared and stopped hailing on us!  Like it was meant to be!

Telluride is just breathtaking!  I know I talk too much about how amazing this country is from coast to coast and everything in between, but look at the view the band got to see while they were playing!!!  Holy Moly!

And what a great crowd!  These people really love music too!

Our set list today:

Up Above My Head
Fruits of My Labor
Small Town Blues
Richland Women Blues
Runaway Soul
Woke Up This Morning
Truth
Hole In My Pocket
Real Love

Scottie plays Mandolin on Hole In My Pocket with us, it's just beautiful, really.

We had a couple of hours to eat dinner (amazing food here too, by the way, bolognese sauce almost as good as my Nana's, but don't tell her that), and hang on the bus, listen to Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt, (rough life for us, really) before we had to get to the after party at the Opera House where we played with the Lee Boys!  Wow, they are incredible too, such energy!  It was awesome!
We are on the bus now, heading out to the Denver Airport.  I'm exhausted.  What a rollercoaster weekend!  It worked out and I am incredibly relieved!
I think everyone enjoyed the tour bus experience, hopefully there will be repeat performances (though with a little more time and a little less distance between gigs...) in the future!
Night all!  Hopefully we will see you in October in Canada, Minneapolis, or Ohio!

9/19/2009 Monterey Jazz Festival

I was lucky enough last year to tour with the 50th Anniversary Monterey Jazz Festival National Tour, so going to this festival for me felt a little bit like I was coming home.  I know that the band felt that way, even though they weren't on the tour with me.  When we pulled up to the venue today, it was like a warm fuzzy blanket was pulled around us, they took such great care of us!
Not only do we get to play with BOTH Socttie and Hadden (which is always a joy and a pleasure), but we also had some great friends come hang with us backstage.  Shemekia's Road Manager and my dear friend, Marya was there, our manager, Charles Driebe, and loads of musicians we haven't seen in ages stopped by to say hi!
For the first time in Ruthie Foster Touring, we have a tour bus taking us to Telluride tonight and tomorrow, so I have to thank graciously Marya, for running me all over town this morning getting supplies for our comfort on the bus tonight...
Anyway, the energy at this festival is amazing!  They really love music here, and you can totally feel that coming off the audience even from the side of the stage.  I got some really great pictures of the show today...

Our set list today:

Up Above My Head
Fruits of My Labor

Woke Up This Mornin
Runaway Soul

We must've gotten 3 standing ovations, it seemed everytime I looked at the crowd, they were up and cheering!  What a great way to start a crazy weekend!!!

We are on the bus now.  Gus and Sebastian are our incredible drivers that will make it to Telluride on time for tomorrow's show, I can just feel it!

Oh Yeah, here's the bus:

We are totally traveling in Style!!!
I should get some rest now, it's another big day for us tomorrow at Telluride Blues and Brews Festival!!

9/12 & 13, 2009 Remus, MI  Wheatland Music Festival

On our way into town yesterday we stopped at this lovely place, where hard cider was being tasted and pies were for sale.  There also was wine tasting of Michigan wines (gorgeous, although I was driving, so I couldn't do any tasting...).  But I did get a few great shots of gorgeous Michigan..

And Ruthie riding her donkey...

We have too much fun, really we do.

We finally made it to the festival and I have to say, how have we never heard of this amazing festival before?  It was incredible and enormous!!!  What a gem central Michigan has in their backyard!  Driving in was nothing but farm land, I was convinced our GPS was taking us to the middle of nowhere and then BAM!, there's a festival!  We had such a ball both days.  Our first set was in a workshop, and it was very special, the crowd was even up and dancing, two standing ovations in one set...

I was told that this is the festival "character".  He was cracking us up!

Our second set was a few hours later, after some delicious dinner (oh my, there is great food at this festival too, fried dill pickles yummy...), on the main stage.

What a beautiful day it was today.  It was a perfect day/night for an amazing festival!  Personally, I love it when we have a whole day to travel somewhere and then play the next day, and that's what we had today.  It's so nice to wake up in the city you play in, I can't even tell you...
It was gorgeous out today, sunny and breezy, which I know the ladies appreciated that since it was hot under the lights!
I got some pretty good shots of them tonight.

Tonight we played another intimate beautiful hall in State College, PA.  It's really a lovely place, and perfect for our trio.  Unfortunately, I had no camera battery, on the break, I never charged it, can you believe it???  What a bummer, cause it really was a beautiful show tonight!  Our lighting guy, Greg, said you could go to the State Theatre's website and get pictures there, though.  They took some of the first few songs, they would probably be better than what I would get with my little digital point and shoot anyway.

That's my food plug for this blog entry..
We like to eat together, what can I say?
We're off to Bowling Green, OH tomorrow, where we play on Sept. 11, so come check us out if you are in the area!!

Seriously are they photogenic or what?  It's hard to look that good at 8am, and they do it so well!!
We landed in Pittsburgh and got on the road to drive out to Johnstown, PA, about two hours away.  It was a really beautiful drive, although I didn't get much in the way of workable pictures..

Today's show was awesome.

I love it!
We had the crowd up and dancing the whole afternoon!!!

I'm tired now, it's a long drive back to Pittsburgh and we are shooting a movie in Nashville tomorrow, so I need my beauty rest, not everyone can look that great so early in the morning!
If you can, go see Ruthie in Maine, at the beginning of September, I won't be with her, but I know the shows will be amazing!  I'll post more from State College, PA on the 9th of September!  See y'all on the road!

I hope that the people of Chicago know what a gem the Old Town School of Folk Music really is.  We had a great evening here, and tons of friends and family all showed up, it felt just like a family reunion!!

It rained all day here from Ann Arbor.  All Day...We finally made it though.  And thankfully so, I get so tired when driving in the rain!
What a cool venue this is!  AND, I have to tell you that there is a fabulous Grilled Cheese resturant across the street from the venue.  We ordered dinner from it and it was completely my pleasure.  Grilled Cheese is one of my favorite foods, so to have a resturant almost solely dedicated to that venture is absolute heaven for me.  They do have other food... I got a picture of the place.. I recommend it if you ever are in Akron.

I'm told I talk too much about food, but really this place rocks!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
7/30 & 31 Steamboat Springs, CO

We arrived in Denver after some delays finally and got on the road to make our 3 hour trip up the mountains to Steamboat Springs.  It never ceases to amaze me how gorgeous our own country is.  Really.  We have now been all over the world together, and what we have in our "backyards" can rival the most gorgeous places on earth easily.  Colorado is no exception to this, it's just magical here.  Maybe it's the mountains, the thin air, I don't know.  It really just is incredible.  Hadden caught this amazing sunset on the way in, of course, my little point and shoot isn't that awesome, so bear with me...

I'm from Florida, so I know a gorgeous sunset when I see one, and this was just amazing..

We stayed in a condo complex, it was AWESOME!!!  Hot tub, outdoor fireplace, grill, indoor kitchen, we never get these kinds of luxuries on the road.  Our first morning we made breakfast at the condo.  It was like having roomates again!  Awesome!  Most of my previous roomates can attest that I can rock some eggs, I think it was a successful morning!

It gets pretty chilly at night here, so sitting outside by the fire was a lovely change from our hot homes in Texas and Florida.  On Thursday, Ruthie and I did some promo while the band relaxed and adjusted to the altitude before our gig..

The first Steamboat gig was in a barn, but narry a horse had ever set foot in it.  It was built just for parties, and what a party it was!

This is the view outside of the barn...

I think I would go into sensory overload if I lived here.. there's just too much to look at!

The gig went swimmingly.  I did get some shots, even though it was a private party, Katie and I tried to stay out of the way.

And another gorgeous sunset..

We passed out pretty hard after the show.  Most of us have lived on sea level most of our lives, so the altitude was kind of messing with us a bit.  But we woke feeling refreshed, and ended up downtown shopping for some of the afternoon before soundcheck.. I love stimulating local economies... it's my pleasure.

Our gig at the Strings Music Festival in the Strings Pavillion was just incredible.  It looked nearly sold out and the crowd was rowdy and singing.  I got some pretty great shots of the band...

I know I always say this but it really was a special evening..

You will never hear me say this, but I wish there was snow so I could hit the slopes!

We also had a guest appearance, Shemekia Copeland!!!

And then she and her Road Manager, Marya, sold CD's for us, what a trip!!!

7/12/2009 Rotterdam, North Sea Jazz Festival

I can't tell you how incredibly exciting the last couple of days has been.  We arrived here in Rotterdam yesterday, and since it was such an early flight here, most of us decided to nap the rest of the day.  Sam, Tanya and I went out for a stroll and some noodles around 930pm when we woke up (we must have needed the sleep!).  Rotterdam is beautiful and charming.  Since we went to Japan earlier in the year, I have been slightly obsessed with Udon noodle soup, and the soup I had in Rotterdam was not disappointing!  Truly hit the spot!
Today as I was getting our artist passes I ran into Erykah Badu at the hotel!  This festival has an incredible line up and we couldn't wait to see some great music, as well as play some!
It is also Tanya's Birthday tonight, so I arranged for a cake for her in the Dressing room and they really out did themselves!

She was so happy..

I ran into an old friend at our hotel as well.  He is the tour manager for SMV, and I hadn't seen him in 5 years!  What a small world!  Tanya, being our bass player, is very enamured of these guys, so at dinner I also got a picture of them with her...

I think it made her birthday.  And then, we played an another amazing show!  Our friend Staffan Astner, who plays with Eric Bibb, from Stockholm came to play guitar for us on this gig.  What a player!  He really has an amazing presence and tone!!!

And the crowd sang Happy Birthday to Tanya...

There were two standing ovations during the set, they really brought the house down!

Anyway, we fly home in a couple of hours, so I should probably get to packing.  It's a long flight back to the states!!!  We've had a great time over here and can't wait to come back already!  We will have a couple of weeks off before our next gig back in the states, at the Poconos Blues Festival on July 26.  Hope to see some of you there!

7/8/2009 Dublin and Foggia

What a day!
We checked out of the hotel this morning and went walking around Dublin.  What a lovely city!!

Nobody has stopped me from snapping the photos, so I continue...
There's all these great flower boxes in the windows of apartments here, I love it!

We went for a walk in one of the many parks in this city, there are squares everywhere with lovely parks!

It's very green here, they don't call it the Emerald Isle for no reason!

We found the shopping district after the park, it was my pleasure.  While I didn't really buy anything, just some books, it was nice to get some fresh air and see the sights a bit.

I felt a connection to this city, and I will miss it very much, hopefully we will be back, and soon!!!
After our shopping excursion, it was time to head to the airport for Italy!!!  It was a pretty long trip but we made it here with no problems, other than my lost luggage.  It's ok, they will find it I'm sure.
After arriving in Italy, we were starved and our promotor, Gianni arranged for some delicious pasta for us, home made!  Thanks Nino, what an amazing introduction to a country!  We feel very welcomed here and thankful for the wonderful treatment!
I am tired now, after the big meal and need some sleep, so night all, until tomorrow!

What an exciting day we had today!  It was excruciatingly early this morning, our plane ride to Dublin, but we made it here safely.  Ruthie and I went to do a radio spot this morning right after we checked in to our hotel.  She played on the Pat Kenny show, broadcasted all over Ireland!  After some lunch, and a nice nap, we went to sound check at Whelans.

It was a very cool venue!  It was a little crowded so it was kinda hard to shoot the show but I got a couple of good ones..

It was such an energized evening.  The Irish know how to party!  We were loving it!  It felt like there were positive ions floating around the room touching everyone.. it's hard to explain, but all I can say is that it was just AWESOME!

Our Set List:

Up Above My Head
Runaway Soul
